Red Sox go with Doubront versus Rays
Baseball Betting Lines
07/06/2010 -
(Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Felix Doubront returns to Boston's rotation this evening
when the Red Sox continue their three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays
at Tropicana Field.
Doubront will be stepping in for an injured Clay Buchholz, who was placed on
the disabled list on Monday with a strained left hamstring.
The 22-year-old Doubront earned the win in his big league debut earlier this
season when he allowed five runs -- three earned -- on six hits with two walks
and a pair of strikeouts over five-plus innings in Boston's 10-6 victory over
the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 18.
The Rays drew first blood in Monday's opener, as Jason Bartlett's sacrifice
fly in the seventh inning proved to be the difference, helping Tampa Bay to a
6-5 win.
John Jaso had a two-run single, and Carl Crawford added three hits, drove in
one and score a run for Tampa Bay, which has won three straight and five of
its last six overall.
Randy Choate (2-2) earned the win for retiring the final batter in the top of
the seventh. Rays starter Matt Garza lasted only three innings after giving up
four runs on seven hits with a pair of walks. Rafael Soriano closed out the
game with a scoreless ninth to record his 22nd save of the season.
"To be able to pick (the starters up) -- I mean, they're struggling a little
bit, compared to what they were doing earlier in the year -- it's just nice to
be there and do our role," Choate said.
Eric Patterson went 3-for-5 with two homers, while Kevin Youkilis chipped in
with an RBI triple for the Red Sox, who have dropped three of five.
"Personally, it was a good night, but losing the game stings. We'll come back
tomorrow, try to get two of three," Patterson said.
Ramon Ramirez (0-2) took the loss for giving up the go-ahead run. Boston
starter Daisuke Matsuzaka was tagged for eight hits and five runs -- four
earned -- with four walks and struck out four in five-plus innings.
Getting the call for Tampa Bay will be righty Jeff Niemann, who is 6-2 with a
2.80 ERA. He did not get a decision on Wednesday in Minnesota, as he allowed
three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 5-4 win.
Niemann beat the Red Sox back on April 19 and is 1-1 in two starts against
them with a 6.30 ERA.
On the milestone watch, Boston manager Terry Francona is one win shy of 900
for his big league career. Once he gets that win, Francona will join Tony La
Russa (2,597), Bobby Cox (2,461), Joe Torre (2,291), Lou Piniella (1,819), Jim
Leyland (1,455), Dusty Baker (1,361), Bruce Bochy (1,223) and Mike Scioscia
(946) as the only active managers to reach the 900 mark.
Tampa has won six of its 10 meetings with Boston this season, but the Red
Sox have won four of the last six matchups.

Is there such a thing as a trap game in the NFL?
I once asked that question to Pete Korner, who at the time was office manager and a senior linesmaker for Las Vegas Sports Consultants.
Korner almost ripped my head off. There is no such thing as a trap game, he loudly berated me. It’s a myth. The numbers are made using power ratings, he said.
There are trap games, though. They just might not be what you think. The perception is of a good team, say Philadelphia, laying a small number against New Orleans.
Using the highly-respected power ranking from The Gold Sheet, you’d find the Eagles with a power rating of 4 and the Saints at 8. When you factor the game being played in New Orleans, you could see why the line opened so short at less than a field goal.
For some, this makes it enticing to take the Eagles. That’s not a real trap game, though.
A real trap game, says professional gambler Dave Malinsky, is thinking you’re getting value betting a bad team, which brings us to the Oakland Raiders-Denver Broncos matchup.
The Raiders are +15 in this long-standing division rivalry. Denver is on a short week having dispatched Baltimore Monday. However, the Raiders haven’t covered the spread their last 10 games.
Many bettors don’t trust the Raiders to give a full effort. Few think much of Art Shell and his Oakland’s coaching staff.
So oddsmakers have to do something to make Oakland attractive if they hope to get equal action.
Now Malinsky is a value shopper. But he won’t touch the Raiders even getting more than two touchdowns.
“I try to eliminate the undisciplined, unfocused teams because they’re the ones most likely to suffer the bad beats,” he said.
Near the top of Malinsky’s list of stay-away teams is the Miami Dolphins, who have yet to cover a spread this season.
“Whatever you think of Nick Saban, you have to look at the penalties and turnovers,” Malinsky said.
It’s easy to point out the Dolphins failed to get the money this past week against New England because Olindo Mare missed a field goal and had another field goal blocked. But even though the Dolphins outgained the Patriots, 283-213, they committed eight penalties.
Bad teams not only cost themselves victories, but pointspread covers as well. The Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers are two more examples.
The Cardinals couldn’t have been in a better position this past Sunday, up 14-0 at home against a mediocre Kansas City Chiefs squad. But they couldn’t hold it. The Packers got a push against St. Louis, but also could have won losing by three when Brett Favre fumbled at the St. Louis 11-yard line with 44 seconds left.
“The Packers were in a position to beat Philadelphia, too,” Malinsky said. “But they couldn’t even cover double digits.
“These teams just make mistakes and it costs you … they always will look good from a value standpoint. They really will. But that’s the trap.”
Houston and Tennessee rank among the six-worst teams. Malinsky wouldn’t be afraid to take either of these teams, however, if the price were high enough.
The Texans are bad, Malinsky said, but they have some discipline. The Titans showed they could not only come up with an outstanding game plan, but execute it as well, losing by one to the Colts on the road as an 18 ?-point underdog this past Sunday.
“Jeff Fisher is a worker,” Malinsky said of the Titans coach. “I’m not sure how hard Art Shell wants to work when he gets out of bed.”
Fisher, though, could be out as Tennessee coach after this season. Is he still worth backing in the right spot, with the right price, as a lame duck coach?
“It’s in his nature to keep working hard and not worry about any possible lame duck status,” Malinsky said. “He’s coaching for his resume.”

March Madness odds and printable March Madness brackets
With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship. Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92. After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points. Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1. Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years. With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed. UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern. Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier. OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak. Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four. It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta. But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
